Sex

That got your attention didn't it? At least you didn't giggle, or maybe you did...

I'm teaching sex ed. to year 8. And LOVING it. It's so funny. Today I surveyed and pre-tested them on their knowledge.

Reading their answers has provided me with many giggles this afternoon. I was pretty shocked by how much they don't know and by how much a few kids knew. A couple of kids got about 20/25 but most kids got less than 8/25.

I'm excited about teaching them, although it is hard. One class is quite mature, the other class are gigglers and talkers.

About 2/30 of the kids in each class come from Christian families (which is interesting, considering it's a Christian school). I have the potential to positively change their lives, and I pray that I will be able to educate them and help protect them. Pray for me too!

I've been trying to think of interesting ways to teach the kids about things. I have a couple ideas.

I'm going to play parts of an episode of 90210 (yes, trashy show I know) Where some girl who was a druggie finds out her ex-bf has Aids. So she goes to gets tested for HIV. The nurse comes out and tells her she tested negative, but that she is pregnant. Adriana (i think that's the druggies name) goes, But i'm 16, I can't be pregnant!).

And for teaching abstinence one of my ideas is to buy this huge big chocolate freckle heart. I'm going to walk around the classroom, saying one reason for having sex. Eg. The other boys teased me because i was a virgin. He said he loved me. I was bored. Everyone else was doing it. With each reason I say, I'm going to break off a piece of the heart and put it on their desk. When i get to the last person in the class. I'm only going to have one piece of the heart left and I’m going to talk about how I met the most amazing guy. The guy I’ve been looking for, for so long. He is better than I'd dreamed of (blahblahblah).

And this is all I had to give him...

Now for my funny sex ed answers of the day!

what are some effects hormones have on a person?
"go crazy and go through puberty"

what changes do boys go through during puberty?
"they wet the bed"
"they want to have sex or do something with their ****" (That is seriously what they wrote, i find it funny that they are okay writing the rest, but not their **** word)

what is another name for menstruation?
" jacking off" crossed out. replaced with "marsterbushon"

where is sperm made?
"inside a mothers..."
"inside a mothers stomach" (i think these two might have been cheating off each other. Fat lot of good that did! haha.
"in the boys willy"

What is a hormone?
"it is a sign sent to your brain to start to grow"
"something you get when you become old"
"when you get older and sillyer and sexually attracted to a person of the other sex" (my personal favourite answer!)

So it's pretty interesting. They obviously have a lot to learn! I'm glad for these answers though, many of the kids were too embarrassed to write anything even though I don't know their names yet.

Any ideas or comments any of you have please feel free to share them with me!

Toned, Tanned, Fit & Ready

In the song "California Gurls" by Katy Perry & Snoop Dog. One of the lines, says "Tone, Tan, Fit and Ready" and I like that.

I've adopted it as my health anthem, and Australianised it just a little.

"Toned, Tanned, Fit & Ready"

I want to have toned muscles, and I want to be fit and healthy and ready for whatever life throws at me. The tanned part I'm not going to work too hard on because I don't want skin cancer. But with the amount of exercise I do and my skins tallent at tanning by itself, I will naturally get a tan. But I will not, purposely tan.

My aim is for health. Not for looks. I want to treat my body the best that I can, so that I'll be able to get the most out of life.

I really love the following Nike Ad. Check it out.

22- The Final Minutes

11.44pm June 24, 2010
I like traditions, unless they are wrong, or I disagree with them. But if it’s a tradition I created for myself, obviously, I’m okay with it. And I like to do it. I’m sentimental like that. Every year, the night before my birthday, I write in my journal about the year that has passed, and sometimes what I want the next year of my life to hold. I left my journal at college this year, so a blog entry it shall become.
Where to start… hmm… Since my last birthday, I’ve finally gotten over my ex-bf. Became ‘friends’ with him again, so that’s nice. I’ve learnt a lot about myself, about what I want, what I value, who I am. I realized that I had become too serious, and have started to learn to joke and make my life more enjoyable again. I’ve forced myself to be more outgoing, and focused a lot more on my science studies. Pulled an 83.3% (yes, I cannot round down to 83%) in my last Biochemistry test (exam results still pending) which is a HUGE improvement.
I would normally write more, but I’m almost out of time, and my brother (who is an amazing genius, who I am so proud of!) is sitting next to me so I don’t feel like I can delve into my issues and feelings. Ha-ha.
What do I want for the next year of my life.
a)      I want to depend on God, and stay close to him, especially when things are going good. I always come running back, when my heart gets broken, or I get stressed or I’ve just stuffed up my life again. And he takes me back. But I don’t want to leave his arms anymore.
b)      I want to focus on my health. I want to eat and exercise in a way that will help me to live as long and healthfully as possible.
c)       I want to focus on my studies and stop wasting time on things that don’t matter.
d)      I want to be selfless, and live my life in a way that is pleasing to God.
So that’s a very brief summary of my life this past year, and my aims and hopes for the future. Thanks to all of you for being a part of my life.
It’s now  11.59pm and I’m done, just in time.
